Raymond McCauley, The ability to read DNA is in the midst of an unprecedented exponential change. The Human Genome Project took about $300 million and 11 years to complete, we now do for under $5000 in a week, and there's no end in sight. What are the practical applications of this technology? What are the technical and economic trends driving this revolution? How can small, agile companies ride along? And where are we going next?

Broadband magnetic signatures of solvated chemistries
Bennett M. Butters, A low temperature SQUID (super conducting quantum interference device) based approach to broadband molecular interrogation is discussed with an emphasis on the technical basis for detection, signal analysis, and the usefulness of acquired data. Also, presented are the analytical results of selected materials and the implications to biochemistry.

Nanostructured materials for large and small molecule selectivity
Robert Meagley, We describe work ongoing at ONE Nanotechnologies, LLC to create and refine chemoselective films for application as recognition elements in several sensor platforms. Organic materials and nanocomposites have been developed that allow gas phase and liquid phase detection of explosives and chemical agents. Very high surface area interfaces are achieved through processes suitable for high volume manufacture. Novel strategies enabling high molecular weight precursors to be used in a plasma enhanced deposition mode will be shown. Highly structured surfaces shown to have significant capability to recognize individual proteins from mixtures will be presented and implications for advanced biomarker sensing will be discussed. The thrust of this work illustrates the value of an interdisciplinary approach to advanced material design and integration in devices.

The development of highly multiplexed sequencing reactions via clonal oligonucleotide clusters has provided the means to reduce the cost of sequencing by roughly five orders of magnitude over the last six years. This "next generation" sequencing has enabled sequencing as a basic tool to inquire the state of DNA variation, the transcriptional levels of the multitude of RNAs, the location of transcriptional cofactors, and many other molecular characteristics that can be expressed as an oligonucleotide. This presentation will summarize the technology and showcase several vignettes of current biological and medical interest.

ATRP Solutions, Inc. is a world-wide supplier of ATRP-based reagents, contract research services, and ingredients for personal care and cosmetics products. Our reagents and contract research services create value by enabling our customers to accelerate their research and commercialization of ATRP-based technologies. Our products include Me6TREN and TPMA, which are precursors to highly efficient ATRP catalysts and enable low cost and environmentally friendly processes. Our brands include Ultimate ATRPTM process, a proprietary industrial scale ATRP process technology, and ADVANTOMERTM ingredient, a multi-functional ingredient for the formulation of prestige personal care and cosmetics products. 2 - \"Success-failure\" of GreenFUEL Technologies

GreenFUEL Technologies was developed from the entrepreneurial mind of an enigmatic, gregarious and somewhat visionary chemical engineer; the company was founded in 2001 and grew through 2009 to become the leading developer of biofuel and co-products from algal biomass. An early business model defined the technology as a pollution prevention technology, touting an “Emissions to Biofuel” slogan with a “waste-not, profit-more” tag line. GreenFUEL Technologies, like the plethora of start-up ventures that have followed in it's wake, experienced a roller coaster ride leading to the continued evolution and adaptation of the business model: go-to-market strategy and technology platform. In this presentation we will review the company history and discuss aspects of the company's four key patented technologies. We will review and discuss the challenges that resulted in the downfall of GreenFUEL Technology in 2009 and identify the legacy that remains with GreenFUEL Technologies as a “Success-Failure.”

Galileoscope LLC was founded in 2008 to design, develop, manufacture, and distribute high quality, low-cost telescopes for the International Year of Astronomy - 2009. A lengthy and remarkably complicated process ensued that ultimately resulted in the successful distribution of more than 200,000 telescopes, a third-world telescope donation program, and the continuing operation of the company promoting science education and outreach. Examining the process of creating and running this company offers kernels of insight into the trials and tribulations of engaging in a worldwide technology business venture that are applicable to any discipline and nearly any product. This talk will address the history of this company, and discuss lessons-learned that will benefit others anticipating starting their own firms.[p]

4 - Staying lean and utilizing social media: Remaining relevant as a small chemical business

As a small chemical business providing turnkey monitoring solutions to a niche market, we recognized the need to apply the principles of lean manufacturing to our standard operating procedures. This decision was made for several reasons, including cost control, supply control, and ease of manufacturing one-of-a-kind systems that stem from a base product. We utilize standardized major components throughout our product lines, such as electronic and mechanical components as well as software platforms. In 2008, as our resources for print advertising were dwindling, we started a monthly E-Newsletter to connect with our current clients and to market new systems, upgrades, and services. Based on our successful first year of the newsletter campaign, we decided to incorporate social media so as to enhance our newsletter reach, i.e., to expand our prospective client base. We started a company blog, opened a Twitter account, and created business pages on Facebook and LinkedIn. In 2011, we have converted leads into sales and can track the source to our social networking activities, including the foregoing social media and active participation in Linked-In discussions and tweets.
