SCHB offers networking opportunities and benefits for small chemical businesses
Presented at the Fall ACS National Meeting in San Francisco 2014
Title: SCHB offers networking opportunities and benefits for small chemical businesses
| SCHB at SCI-MIX Monday August 11, 2014 8pm With SCHB PR Chair, Jennifer Maclachlan |
Abstract Body: In our thirty-fourth year, our mission remains the same: to aid in the formation, development and growth of small chemical businesses. We do this by continuously providing relevant programming and social events at ACS national and regional meetings for attendees who currently own and operate their own small chemical businesses as well as for those who are considering it. In 2012, SCHB began entrepreneurial programming with the Southeastern Pennsylvania (SEPACS), Northeastern (NESACS), and Georgia Local Sections. In 2013, with the assistance of an ACS IPG, SCHB arranged programming at other scientific society meetings, including AAAS, APS, and CLEO. In 2014, in collaboration with PROF, we hosted networking lunches for our speakers, member, and other interested persons. In 2015, SCHB will sponsor several symposia at Pacifichem. At this 2014 San Francisco meeting, SCHB invites you to attend our technical sessions, meet old friends and new connections at our reception, visit our expo booth and "discuss businesses," and join us for lunch. After the meeting, stay in touch with SCHB member via Linked-In, Facebook, Twitter and on the ACS Network.

11 - ACS Chemical Innovation and Entrepreneurship Council role in job creation
Judy Giordon, Janet Bryant, Lisa Kemp, Jennifer Maclachlan, John R. Vercellotti, Carlyn Burton. ecosVC, Pelham, MA 01002, United States
The ability for chemists to develop and communicate the value of their research as solutions for addressing challenges and opportunities faced by people and the planet is critical for 1) expanding personal professional development and career opportunities, 2) creating economic development and jobs, and 3) for demonstrating the value of chemistry – the central science! The Chemical Innovation and Entrepreneurship Council (CIEC) was formed to ensure that all members of the ACS – regardless of career stage or aspirations – have the opportunities and connections to be innovators who can knowledgeably and successfully transform their research into sustainable solutions to market opportunities. Join us and hear how the CIEC is working across the ACS to develop and share with ACS members roadmaps each of us can use to help successfully take the journey from researcher to innovator to a potential “start –up” whether as an “intra”preneur within an organization or as an “entre”preneur out on your own. Both require the same skills!

#NERM12~a @pidgirl's eye view: The lost post
Here's a previously unpublished blog post from October 2012 which never made it's way out of *Draft Mode* until I came across it today while working on my newsletter!
The 38th Northeast Regional Meeting (NERM) of the American Chemical Society hosted by the Rochester, NY Local Section September 30-October 3 2012, was my first opportunity to organize and facilitate three half day technical sessions for the ACS Division of Small Chemical Businesses. Earlier this year I organized a social media symposium and SCI-MIX for SCHB at the Fall National Meeting and participated as a speaker in the True Stories of Success of Chemical Entrepreneurs in San Diego at the Spring National Meeting.

At NERM for 2 minutes and already found the ACS President! At Science is FUN science teacher workshop. —L to R with George Ruger and Bassam Shakhashiri, ACS 2012 President.
I stuck around before checking the symposium room for SCHB banner setup because I love listening to Bassam speak and decided to live tweet from the Science Teacher Workshop.
After setup while on the way to the opening reception I ran into Tom Gilbert from my Local Section. While chatting with him I told him about the upcoming NESACS Cape Cod Science Cafe~The Chemistry of Wine Event that my father and I had organized. Tom asked me to send him the information about the event and he even ended up making the trek to Cape Cod and attending!
As I circulated around the room I saw Bill Suits who introduced me to Andy Jorgensen. Turns out Andy is an old HNU PID customer of mine! I asked him if I could get a picture with him and post it on my company Facebook page and Tweet it. Andy agreed!
Sidebar: Bill and I served together on the ACS National Committee on Public Relations and Communications in 2011 but he and my father *go way back*. Bill used to sell the HNU PIDs back when he worked at Varian as a Chromatography Specialist.
Monday morning kicked off with the SCHB flagship programming Best Practices for Entrepreneurs led by Andrew Basner from Syracuse speaking about his experience with the NSF-I Corporation program followed by the importance of intellectual property protection with local area patent attorneys from Heslin Rothenberg Farley and Mesiti PC. This particular session was very well orchestrated with three patent attorneys from the firm speaking on their expertise of topics ranging from copyright protection, trade secrets, patent protection and how all of these can be the determining factor in the success or failure of a small chemical business. This was followed by a facilitated panel discussion led by Bonnie Charpentier, American Chemical Society Board of Directors, Director, District VI

PID Analyzers, LLC launched their social media marketing plan in November of 2008 with a monthly E-Newsletter utilizing Constant ContactTM. One year later, in November 2009, aFacebook Business Page, the corporate blog “The Analyzer Source,” a LinkedIn page, and two Twitter accounts for owners Jack Driscoll (Twitter handle @pidguy) and Jennifer Maclachlan (Twitter handle @pidgirl) were established. We began to publish regular updates on LinkedIn while continuously building our own professional networks on LinkedIn. In the last year we addedGoogle+, Pinterest, and Tumblr to our marketing efforts. We are reaching a unique audience with each social media platform and we offer value with each post; the result is that our following is increasing. How do we do this? We note what people "like,"retweet, or comment on and consistently make our next post not about our products, but about people, places, and things that interest us and make us more human and less corporate. This poster will explore how we have built relationships with customers and prospective customers via social media marketing and how it has translated to sales of our analyzers.

@pidguy's true story of developing & marketing an environmental instrumentation company: a forty year perspective
Join us on the ACS Division of Small Chemical Businesses Program Track at the ACS National Meeting in New Orleans to hear @pidguy's *true story*
26 - Developing and marketing an environmental instrumentation company: A forty year perspective
Jack N. Driscoll, PID Analyzers, LLC, Sandwich, MA 02563, United States
HNU Systems, Inc., was founded by Driscoll & Spaziani in December 1973, intending to develop a new technology, photoionization detection (PID), for the analysis of environmental pollutants. We went to NIOSH in Cincinnati to explore potential uses of PID in industrial hygiene. During our visit, a scientist at NIOSH said, "If you had a portable instrument that would measure vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) at 1 ppm, we would be very interested." We went to a gas company the next day to get a lecture bottle of VCM and that afternoon we had a VCM monitor. A working prototype portable (battery operated) PID was built for the AIHCE show and, two months later, we got our first order from BFG. Once the evaluation period was over, we received an order for 50 units from BFG. In addition, BFG licensed their process for manufacturing VCM worldwide and included photoionization as the method of choice for VCM monitoring. We were off and running with VCM for the first few years. The next 35 years included rapid growth and then contraction as the economic times and markets changed. A number of years of economic struggles was followed by reorganizing and forming a new Company, PID Analyzers. Since bank financing has become more difficult in the past decade, PID has reverted to self funding to continue growing. These financial issues along with changing sources for parts will be discussed in detail.

Small Chemical Business Symposium Report at Nova 10/11/12
![]() |
| This award winning symposium earned a ChemLuminary award at the 15th Annual Awards Ceremony September 10, 2013 in Indianapolis, IN for Outstanding Collaboration between a Local Section and a Division: Northeastern Local Section and the Division of Small Chemical Businesses |

Guest blog post by Jack Driscoll, PR Chair NESACS
Waltham, MA,
Oct.11,2012- When Nova Biomedical Corp. in Waltham, MA agreed to host the 926th
meeting of the Northeastern Section of the American Chemical Society (NESACS),
we asked whether we could add an afternoon symposium to the venue and received
an enthusiastic “yes”. Our section,
NESACS, is the largest of the 187 sections of the ACS with 7,500 members mostly
in the greater Boston area. Most people are surprised to hear that. The symposium program is described here.
SBA financing. Other subjects included advantages of executive
education for Tech entrepreneurs, non dilutive and dilutive equity funding and
an enlightening talk on the advantages of tweeting and other social media for
marketing your businesses. Madeleine Jacobs, Executive Director & CEO of
the American Chemical Society, the world’s largest scientific organization with
164,000 members talked about jobs and ACS programs for entrepreneurs that is
described at http://www.acs.org/ei. We had
a number of our NESACS members describe “True
Stories of Chemical Entrepreneurs”. The first described how he worked with
Senators Kennedy and Dole to get government R&D funding for small
businesses in the early 80’s. This became the NSF SBIR programs. Another, of
the Movie “21” fame (MIT entrepreneurs develop a system to predict the cards in
blackjack) and a serial entrepreneur describes four of her new ventures in
biofuels, drug discovery etc. The last
true story was about of the start up of a contract drug discovery company.
We had very lively discussions on financing small companies
and how the Nova start up (no venture capital just bank financing) in the
1970’s could not be duplicated today.
We had 50 participants at this meeting with 30% NESACS
members, 30% from Universities, 30%
small business owners and a number of
patent attorneys. We also had Vivian Walworth, an entrepreneur, attend
the seminar. On Thursday evening she received an award for being a 70 year
member of the ACS. She is still very active in NESACS activities.
This symposium was organized by Dr. Mukund Chorgade,
President, Chorgade Enterprises and immediate past chair of the Small
Chemical Business Div. of the ACS, and Dr. Jack Driscoll, President, PID
Analyzers, LLC, and Public Relations Chair of NESACS.
The symposium was sponsored by NESACS, the NESACS Government
Relations Group, the Small Chemical
Business Division of the ACS and Nova Biomedical.
