CO2 Emissions in Indoor Air and Potential Solutions for Reduction

  • Room: B316
  •
  • Session Number: G09-07
Tuesday, March 08, 2022: 3:45 PM - 4:05 PM
Author(s) Dr. Jack Driscoll and Jennifer L. Maclachlan

Description

In a recent NIH study, associations of higher indoor carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations with impaired work performance, increased health symptoms, and poorer perceived air quality have been attributed to correlation of indoor CO2. At levels above 600 ppm CO2, testing was done at 1000 ppm CO2 and they found that moderate and statistically significant decrements occurred in six of nine scales of decision-making performance. To keep the level of CO2 below 600 ppm a new CO2 controller has been developed by PID Analyzers that would automatically work with the HVAC system to increase additional intake air to reduce the CO2. An additional CO2 analyzer would analyze the intake air to ensure that the CO2 level was low. If the intake air was too high then a room CO2 scrubber (using a carbon or molecular sieve or metal oxide cartridge) could be used to reduce the CO2 to an acceptable level. This would lead to improved productivity of the workforce.

Chemists and the Public: The Role of Informal Science Education (#89)

Chemists and the Public: The Role of Informal Science Education (#89)

Organizers: Maclachlan, Jennifer, Burks, Raychelle, Hayashi, Kazuhiro, MacLennan, Matthew S

This will be an important forum for science communicators to network and share their informal SCICOMM how-to's with one another as well as inspire those members of the chemistry enterprise to get started at sharing their passion for science education, in an exemplary way. Seeking to increase the impacts of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) beyond the Academy, scientists and institutions engage in a variety of activities including: public outreach, science communication, engagement through social media, informal science education (ISE), and strategic knowledge mobilization (KM) activities across a range of settings and audiences. In addition to administrative "tried and true" and/or novel engagement methods, scientists also work to assess the broader impacts of their activities and must navigate their institution's review board processes. This session will feature a diverse set of speakers to discuss the latest research, best communication practices, recurring challenges, and common institutional / agency processes, and assessment tools.
