#NERM12~a @pidgirl's eye view: The lost post

Here's a previously unpublished blog post from October 2012 which never made it's way out of *Draft Mode* until I came across it today while working on my newsletter!

The 38th Northeast Regional Meeting (NERM) of the American Chemical Society hosted by the Rochester, NY Local Section September 30-October 3 2012, was my first opportunity to organize and facilitate three half day technical sessions for the ACS Division of Small Chemical Businesses. Earlier this year I organized  a social media symposium and SCI-MIX for SCHB at the Fall National Meeting and participated as a speaker in the True Stories of Success of Chemical Entrepreneurs in San Diego at the Spring National Meeting.

I stuck around before checking the symposium room for SCHB banner setup because I love listening to Bassam speak and decided to live tweet from the Science Teacher Workshop.
 

After setup while on the way to the opening reception I ran into Tom Gilbert from my Local Section. While chatting with him I told him about the upcoming NESACS Cape Cod Science Cafe~The Chemistry of Wine Event that my father and I had organized. Tom asked me to send him the information about the event and he even ended up making the trek to Cape Cod and attending!

As I circulated around the room I saw Bill Suits who introduced me to Andy Jorgensen. Turns out Andy is an old HNU PID customer of mine! I asked him if I could get a picture with him and post it on my company Facebook page and Tweet it. Andy agreed!

Sidebar: Bill and I served together on the ACS National Committee on Public Relations and Communications in 2011 but he and my father *go way back*. Bill used to sell the HNU PIDs back when he worked at Varian as a Chromatography Specialist.

The majority of my SCHB speakers for the three half day sessions were  invited by me or by an introduction and recommendation from a common person. In addition to several email exchanges I also spoke to each of my speakers on the phone. Next time what I will do is introduce the speakers to one another in advance of the symposium and arrange a conference call~it makes such a difference when there has been some rehearsal some feeling of familiarity with one another up at the podium. This is especially essential for a panel discussion. Fortunately we had the session wide coffee break to make quick introductions amongst the panelists so they appeared comfortable.

Monday morning kicked off with the SCHB flagship programming Best Practices for Entrepreneurs led by Andrew Basner from Syracuse speaking about his experience with the NSF-I Corporation program followed by the importance of intellectual property protection with local area patent attorneys from Heslin Rothenberg Farley and Mesiti PC. This particular session was very well orchestrated with three patent attorneys from the firm speaking on their expertise of topics ranging from copyright protection, trade secrets, patent protection and how all of these can be the determining factor in the success or failure of a small chemical business. This was followed by a facilitated panel discussion led by Bonnie Charpentier, American Chemical Society Board of Directors, Director, District VI
