	1:35 pm	6	Digital biology: Life under Moore's Law Raymond McCauley, The ability to read DNA is in the midst of an unprecedented exponential change. The Human Genome Project took about $300 million and 11 years to complete, we now do for under $5000 in a week, and there's no end in sight. What are the practical applications of this technology? What are the technical and economic trends driving this revolution? How can small, agile companies ride along? And where are we going next?
	2:05 pm	7	Broadband magnetic signatures of solvated chemistries Bennett M. Butters, A low temperature SQUID (super conducting quantum interference device) based approach to broadband molecular interrogation is discussed with an emphasis on the technical basis for detection, signal analysis, and the usefulness of acquired data. Also, presented are the analytical results of selected materials and the implications to biochemistry.
	2:35 pm	8	Nanostructured materials for large and small molecule selectivity Robert Meagley, We describe work ongoing at ONE Nanotechnologies, LLC to create and refine chemoselective films for application as recognition elements in several sensor platforms. Organic materials and nanocomposites have been developed that allow gas phase and liquid phase detection of explosives and chemical agents. Very high surface area interfaces are achieved through processes suitable for high volume manufacture. Novel strategies enabling high molecular weight precursors to be used in a plasma enhanced deposition mode will be shown. Highly structured surfaces shown to have significant capability to recognize individual proteins from mixtures will be presented and implications for advanced biomarker sensing will be discussed. The thrust of this work illustrates the value of an interdisciplinary approach to advanced material design and integration in devices.

This "next generation" sequencing has enabled sequencing as a basic tool to inquire the state of DNA variation, the transcriptional levels of the multitude of RNAs, the location of transcriptional cofactors, and many other molecular characteristics that can be expressed as an oligonucleotide. This presentation will summarize the technology and showcase several vignettes of current biological and medical interest.

The Model 201-B is a flexible and versatile Analyzer. More than three thousand

of these photoionization detector (PID) based analyzers have been sold worldwide for

applications ranging from carbon bed breakthrough, leak detection to stack and ambient air monitoring. This is attributed to the rugged and durable design that is characteristic of all PID Analyzers products.

Several years ago, we added the flame ionization detector (FID) to the 201 series product line. Other notables in our continuous analyzer 200 series include the Model 202 Infrared (IR) and the Model 204 thermal conductivity based detector (TCD).

During the last two years we have steadily grown our social media presence, as well as developed metrics to determine the return on investment of our marketing time and expenditures. GreenFUEL Technologies was developed from the entrepreneurial mind of an enigmatic, gregarious and somewhat visionary chemical engineer; the company was founded in 2001 and grew through 2009 to become the leading developer of biofuel and co-products from algal biomass. An early business model defined the technology as a pollution prevention technology, touting an “Emissions to Biofuel” slogan with a “waste-not, profit-more” tag line. GreenFUEL Technologies, like the plethora of start-up ventures that have followed in it's wake, experienced a roller coaster ride leading to the continued evolution and adaptation of the business model: go-to-market strategy and technology platform. In this presentation we will review the company history and discuss aspects of the company's four key patented technologies. We will review and discuss the challenges that resulted in the downfall of GreenFUEL Technology in 2009 and identify the legacy that remains with GreenFUEL Technologies as a “Success-Failure.”

We utilize standardized major components throughout our product lines, such as electronic and mechanical components as well as software platforms. In 2008, as our resources for print advertising were dwindling, we started a monthly E-Newsletter to connect with our current clients and to market new systems, upgrades, and services. Based on our successful first year of the newsletter campaign, we decided to incorporate social media so as to enhance our newsletter reach, i.e., to expand our prospective client base. We started a company blog, opened a Twitter account, and created business pages on Facebook and LinkedIn. At this weekend's ACS Leadership Institute in Ft. Worth, TX, over 300 ACS Leaders got together to meet each other and learn some new skills. Most of the attendees are newly elected Chair-Elects from their Local Sections. However, there were also Division Officers, Career Consultants, and student leaders. Each of them had their own track during the Institute. Helping out with the activities were ACS staff and members of the Presidential Succession and Board members.

Social Media was a big topic this year. With a new layout to the ACS Network, demonstrated over lunch on Friday, to talk about LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter among others, the subject was discussed in sessions and by the attendees in their own small groups. One change from a few years ago- most attendees do not need to return to their rooms to update their status or view documents. No, they have a new way. Using their phone apps, they can do almost anything on their phones that someone can do on their computer. While this is not new, it does seem to be used by a very large portion of the attendees. Having that ability used to be an advantage. Now, not having it feels like a disadvantage.

While most of the more than thirty members in attendance at the Tweetup
(#ACSLI ) were there more for the social part than the media part, there was an interest in learning new ways to communicate to other groups of people, including their local sections. Some attendees were veterans, and were leaving comments on twitter before or during the event. Others added it to their list of things that they want to learn about. While only a few of the newbies might actually be converted, at least everyone seemed to be having a good time. #ACSLI #IYC+1 -George Ruger

Last year was the International Year of Chemistry and we celebrated the commercialization of the photoionization detector at the reception to honor Dr. Jack Driscoll, the father of photoionization, at The Chemistry of Industrial Hygiene Instrumentation at the American Industrial Hygiene Conference and Exposition. The event featured three speakers including the guest of honor who told the story of starting HNU Systems, Inc. way back in 1973, including his first sales visits, his AHA! moment-beating out the competition with the non-destructive photoionization detector vs. the sample destroying flameionization detector and the work on the first Superfund sites with the HNU detector. I've been trying to get a copy of his talk to post on the blog but to no avail-it's likely the anecdotes he shared with us were told in stream of consciousness and have not in fact been written down... Maybe I'll get him to talk at the American Chemical Society Fall National Meeting in Philly (August 2012) at the Small Chemical Businesses Division program: True Stories of Success from Chemical Entrepreneurs and at the Northeast Regional Meeting NERM of the American Chemical Society in Rochester, NY (October 2012). His stories are rich in context, detail and humor that makes him laugh when he tells the story!

So back to where it all begins...The Model 101 photoionization detector-it is no coincidence that Jack dubbed it the 101-with a passion for education, he chose Model 101 as the jumping off point, where the foundation is laid: the basics in any college level course are introduced in the 101 course. Then as one progresses through their education they move to the next course level or in the case of our client base, they would move to the automated, continuous total VOC monitor, the Model 201. We continue the progression moving onto the 301, 401 and 501 gas chromatograph-based analyzers; of course the "graduate level" or 500 series are the most complex requiring a chromatographer as chief operator to interpret analytical results.

Plenty of folks still use and service the Model 101 analyzers, yes, with the analog meter and heavy duty construction (pre-ergonomics) favoring the fast response time and ease of operation (remember it's the 101-anyone can be trained to use it). I'm told "old school" industrial hygienists still record readings by hand even if they are utilizing a digital readout like our Model 102 and especially if they are using the datalog function. We take 101's in on trade-in and still have them available for sale for those nostalgic die-hard folks who won't move into the digital age. Maybe it is a fear of the disposable instrumentation and or appliances that have crept into the commercial and residential corners of our lives. Our original prototype of the Model 102 was actually constructed out of metal (like the 101) but after extensive market analysis was rejected for ABS plastic construction in consideration of user fatigue-workplace ergonomics.

I got up this morning wanting to blog about the Model 102 and yet it seems I can never just get there without talking about the greatness of it's predecessor. It's impossible not to with the 40 year anniversary looming so near (2013) and seeing so many Model 101 service units still coming into our shop every week. And yet, in my career at HNU/PID Analyzers, I was instrumental in the design, function and development of the Model 102 participating in all the research & development sessions including choosing the color and field testing it for the engineers at client sites. So here it is folks, my best sales pitch for the Model 102: the Model 102 is a modern portable VOC detector employing photoionization as the detection principle boasting the best sensitivity in the industry with the widest dynamic range (ppb to high ppm). With a library of over 250 chemical compounds to allow the analyzer to respond as a particular compound ie) vinyl chloride and/or ethylene dichloride or gasoline and/or diesel (there are actual settings for these) etc. the list really does go on and on. By utilizing the unique Snap-On heads, customers are able to customize their analyzer to tailor their exact needs ie) make your own analyzer including a 4-gas meter. With it's lightweight construction and ease of calibration this is the ultimate screening tool for anyone working with chemicals both in the field and in the laboratory (QA/QC batch analysis). Upgrade your GC with a new GC detector

Detectors for Gas Chromatography

HNU Systems, Inc. developed the first PID (photoionization detector) for gas

chromatography (GC). This PID (Model PI51) was introduced at the Pittsburgh Conference

in Cleveland, Ohio in 1976. The PID was found to be 50 times more sensitive than the FID

making it an ideal detector for environmental measurements. Over the past thirty plus

years, the PID has become on of the most important detectors for environmental analysis all over the world. The novel Far UV Absorbance detector (FUV) was introduced by us in 1985. Our flame photometric detector (FPD) ideal for S or P compounds, has novel rare earth filters instead of interference filters to improve the detection limits (2-5 fold) and a quartz jet to minimize decomposition of pesticides before they enter the flame region. Another detector we added in the nineties is our flameionization detector (FID) which comes equipped with a burner with HV bias and collector, a power supply for the FID bias, an electrometer and gauges and flow control for the support gases for the FID. The electrometer output is 0-10 VDC. The customer needs a separate ADC channel to feed the signal into the GC’s data system. Alternately, PID Analyzers sells a data system (Model 53) that will feed the signal into a separate PC.

Why upgrade your GC with a new GC detector? To improve sensitivity, selectivity or even time of analysis (elimination of a derivization step, for example). Add years to the lifetime of your capital equipment (GC) with an upgrade. Extend your lab budget by spending <$5K for a detector instead of >$20 K for a new GC. Remember, not all manufacturer's detectors are the same. For example, we specialize in GC detectors and our PID does not require the use of a concentrator to achieve trace level analysis.

Features

· Easy to Install-The detectors should be mounted firmly to the GC. This simply requires two mounting holes or a clamp. The detector inlets are long enough so that the column can be connected directly to the detector inlet inside the oven.

· Four Detectors to choose from-

PID, FUV, FPD and FID; Operate any two at one time; HNU/PID Analyzer detectors have the widest range and are the best in the industry with respect to performance, specificity and selectivity.

· Run Detectors In-Series-Non destructive detectors such as the PID or FUV can be placed upstream and a second detector (FID, FPD, PID) can be run in-series downstream for additional information or confirmation of a component

· Upgradability-HNU's detectors have been designed to be easy to upgrade. They contain their own proportional temperature controller and have an analog output that provides an input for the auxiliary ADC found on many modern GC's. The analog output can be used with any integrator or recorder.

· HNU brand PID-Most sensitive PID available; axial geometry, inert chamber and ultra stable UV lamp combine to produce the best PID available. This detector is a carbon counter like the FID but it also responds to inorganic species such as hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, phosphine, arsine, iodine since the response depends on the ionization potential of the molecule. The most common lamp is the 10.2 eV but a more selective (9.5 or 8.3 eV) or more universal lamp (11.7 eV- carbon tetrachloride, ethane, chloroform, methanol) is also available. As a result, the selectivity of the PID can be varied.

· FUV-Novel photodiode and ultra stable UV lamp provides nearly universal response and low or sub ppm detection limits. the detection limit of the FUV for methane is approximately the same as the FID. At the same time, this detector will respond to oxygen and water at low or sub ppm levels.

· FPD-Rare earth filters eliminate temperature effects of interference filters and provide a 2-5 fold improvement in sensitivity because of their sharp bands. This detector is selective

for S or P compounds depending upon the filter employed. A dual S/P detector is also

available.

· FID-The FID is a sensitive and very selective detector for hydrocarbons. It has the wide dynamic range (>10⁶). It is equipped with a thermocouple to determine flame temperature and an alarm to notify flame out.

PACS opens for abstracts on January 23, 2012. Please contact me if you are interested in submitting on this topic. I will also be organizing SCI-MIX for the SCHB.

2011 was an amazing year and I really enjoyed celebrating the International Year of Chemistry via the Cape Cod Science Cafe Q1-Q4 as well as other numerous outreach activities including National Meeting events like "chemists can dance" video and the Global Water Experiment-{whose deadline by the way has been extended until the end of March 2012-there is still time to participate in the world's largest chemistry experiment} !

I was fortunate to work with several other GC/GC Column/Accessory manufacturers this year on technical presentations and to meet many really excellent folks through the use of social media as well as meeting them in person at the social media meetup/tweetups and at SCI-MIX and other networking social events. February 2011-Northeastern Section of the American Chemical Society (NESACS) Local Section Monthly Meeting where I got to meet Nancy Jackson, 2011 President of the American Chemical Society.

Her dinner talk on technology was inspiring and the spirit of her speech was certainly echoed by Jack at all of the #IYC2011 Cape Cod Science Cafes during his introductions of the mission of IYC and the vision of the sustainability of the chemical enterprise.

Not an Official IYC event but we sure discussed #IYC2011 at our February National Committee Meeting: Committee on Public Relations and Communications (CPRC)-first visit to the American Chemical Society Headquarters in DC (pictured below).

This was a particularly neat event: bringing together the fields of chemistry and industrial hygiene (like we do at PID Analyzers) by organizing an #IYC2011 event sponsored by the Northeastern Section of the American Chemical Society at the American Industrial Hygiene Conference and Exposition.
